If your child is active for 60 minutes of the day, he or she is meeting Canada’s recommended minimum. For a young one to participate in moderate to vigorous activity for one hour of each day is to meet the standards introduced in the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth in 2016. While a suggested time block of physical exercise is well and good, these ideals differ from the reality. In truth, only 33 per cent of Canadian children meet this target. Nontraditional physical activities can benefit children who shy away from traditional sports, perhaps because they need a different challenge, get easily distracted or feel uncoordinated. Other kids struggle because of behavioral or learning difficulties. Still, children should get at least 60 minutes a day of physical activity. (more)

The number of food ads targeting American children has declined, but most of the ads they do see are for unhealthy foods, a new study finds. Under a voluntary initiative launched in 2007, major food and beverage companies agreed to reduce unhealthy product advertising to children younger than 12. The study found, though, that children still see 10 to 11 food-related TV ads a day, and most of them are for unhealthy items such as sugary drinks, fast food, sweet and salty snacks and candy.
