Parents concerned about their kids living sedentary lives may have more to worry about than they know. According to a 2017 study published in the journal Preventive Medicine that analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination survey from 2003-2004 and 2005-2006, 19-year-olds spent as much time being inactive and sedentary as 60-year-olds. Fat-shaming children at school is no way to fight obesity

The only way we are going to make any progress solving the obesity and anorexia epidemics in the UK is to address our dangerously fraught relationship with food, eating and body image. The obvious service a school can provide is education, often the thing lacking when a person is under- or overweight. Schools should be teaching kids about nutrition and exercise, yes, but they should also be encouraging a healthy, functional attitude to food that includes separating a person’s worth from their weight on a scale. They shouldn’t be preaching calories and kilos; they should be teaching children and teenagers to feel happy, strong and informed enough to live as healthy a life as possible. (more)

Simple drug packaging change could save toddlers’ lives

As America’s opioid crisis continues, too many toddlers are accidentally overdosing on narcotic medicines. But a new study suggests that better packaging might curb the problem. Among kids under the age of 6, single-dose packaging prompted a 79 percent decrease in the number of unintentional exposures to a narcotic called buprenorphine. The medication is given alone or with the drug naloxone to help drug abusers beat their addiction. (more)
