Childhood obesity is on the rise. Children often spend too much time watching TV or playing video games. Rather than singling out an overweight child, parents can help all their children by gradually changing the physical activity level and eating habits of the entire family. By involving the whole family everyone learns healthier habits. Holmes suggested some ways families can get outside, enjoy the great outdoors, and increase their physical activity.

Researchers at Washington State University in Pullman and Florida State University in Tallahassee found that telling children about the benefits of certain foods may get them to eat healthier rather than just giving them a healthy food choice without explanation. Their study was published in the Journal of Nutritional Education and Behavior.
