Good eating habits start early — and they can have a positive impact on children for the rest of their lives. That’s why it’s important to introduce kids at a young age to a wide variety of vegetables and other healthy foods — and get them excited about trying them. “There are fun and creative ways for parents to make sure children are getting the nutrition they need,” said Katie Perry, a registered dietitian at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.

Despite growing awareness around body positivity, new research has found more American teenagers are dieting today than in the past — especially young women. From 2013 to 2016, nearly 38 per cent of adolescents between the ages of 16 and 19 said they had tried to lose weight during the past year, according to new data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics.

Children whose parents often get angry at them, spank them, yell at them or shake them as a way to discipline them could be adversely affected right into their teenage years, researchers at Université de Montréal and CHU Sainte-Justine Research Center have found. And the effects of these kinds of “harsh parenting” can be observed not just in how the teenagers behave, but also in the way their brains process fear, according to the study, led by an UdeM doctoral student and published in Biological Psychology.

What parent doesn’t want a little extra time and for their family to be healthier? The Kids Cook Mondays initiative aims to give you both. When kids pitch in to help make a meal, not only are they more likely to eat the food being prepared, they are freeing up a parent’s time in the kitchen, said Erin Comollo, program development administrator with the New Jersey Healthy Kids Initiative in the Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health at Rutgers University.
