How Many Extracurriculars Is Too Many For Kids?

Moms – Elisa Cinelli

Extracurriculars give kids a well-rounded education, but there’s a fine line between just enough activities to balance academics and going too far. If they get in the way of family time or cut out daily free play, you can be sure your kid has too many extracurriculars. At school, kids learn primarily academics. While they may take an art class or learn a little bit of hockey, the school day is generally filled with math, language, and history. Children benefit from extracurricular activities, which balance the rote memorization and book learning they take on during at school.

How Much Sleep Do Teenagers Really Need?

Moms – Elisa Cinelli

Teenagers need a lot of sleep, and most are not getting it. Understanding how teens’ biological rhythms change and grow can help change that. The teenage years mark a time of change and growth. Growth is both physical, with growth spurts leaving kids in pants up to their calves overnight and constantly bumping into things, and emotional as they transition from childhood into mature thinking. All these changes require sleep. The brain and the body need to recuperate!

Public places through kids’ eyes: What do they value?

Medical X-Press – Fran Gale and Michael Edenborough

Children are too rarely asked their perspectives on public spaces. Traditionally, adults make choices for children, particularly about how they live and play. In yet-to-be-published research* on behalf of a local council, we asked 75 children aged seven to 12 from 10 primary schools in a disadvantaged area of Sydney to map what they value in their local area. Using iPads, children pinned images of their choices to specific locations on a digital map of the local government area. Some of their choices may surprise you.
