The Focused Student: Maintaining the momentum during winter break

The Los Angeles Times – Robert Frank

Winter break — what a wonderful time of the year! We started with a fresh start to the school year, had a wonderful mix of good times and study times, then finished with a flourish as the gateway to a well-earned holiday break. Now comes the hard part for all students and teachers: the second semester. There are fewer breaks, colder, gloomier weather, colds and flu going around, and not as much excitement. Yet students need to somehow sustain the motivation and momentum they generated at the start of the school year.

Parents pay thousands for ‘brain training’ to help kids with ADHD and autism. But does it work?

NBC News – Erin Einhorn

The programs are part of a fast-growing industry that’s based on the premise that targeted games and exercises can rewire the brain to boost memory, sharpen thinking or decrease the challenges associated with anxiety, autism, ADHD and other disorders. Brick-and-mortar training centers like Brain Balance Achievement Centers, which Izak attends, and LearningRx, Kyle’s program, are just one piece of a $2 billion global brain technology market that is increasingly going around the medical industry and marketing directly to consumers.

Hate exercise? Small increases in physical activity can make a big difference

Medical X-Press – Libby Richards

A new year typically brings new resolutions. While making resolutions is easy, sticking with them is not. Exercise-related resolutions consistently make the top 10 list, but up to 80% of resolutions to be healthier, including promises to exercise more, are tossed aside by February. You know physical activity is good for you. But, that isn’t always enough to get or keep you moving. You’re not alone. Fewer than half of American adults are as active as they should be.

When does your child’s flu merit an ER visit?

Medical X-Press – Staff Writer

It’s hard not to worry when your child suffers from the flu, but pediatricians say too many parents are taking their sick kids to the emergency room when a doctor’s visit would suffice. “We are seeing a jump in the number of patients coming to our emergency department for flu-like symptoms,” said Dr. Michele Walsh, medical director of the Pediatric Emergency Department at Vanderbilt University’s Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital, in Nashville, Tenn.
