As thousands of Aussie kids start summer holidays this week, there’s no doubt parents will see an increase in kids’ screen time, snack time and general relaxation. After a busy school year, it’s well-deserved, but could this change in activity have an adverse impact on their health? In a new University of South Australia study, researchers are examining changes in children’s diets and time use over the summer holidays, in a move to better understand factors that are affecting childhood obesity.

Obesity is increasing worldwide, especially among children and teenagers. More than 150 million children in the world are obese in 2019. These children have increased risk of heart disease, cancers and Type 2 diabetes. Teenagers with obesity are likely to remain obese as adults. If these trends continue, 70 per cent of adults aged 40 years could be either overweight or obese by 2040.

If it seems like all your friends have smartphones, you may be on to something. A new report by Common Sense Media, a nonprofit that reports on technology and media for children, found that by the age of 11, more than half of kids in the U.S. have their own smartphone. By age 12, more than two-thirds do, and by 14, teens are just as likely as adults to own a smartphone. Some kids start much younger. Nearly 20% of 8-year-olds have their own smartphone!

Children are constantly awash in a world of brightly colored toys and clothing designed to pique their visual interest from their infancy through childhood. Learning to differentiate between these shades is a huge developmental milestone, but when do toddlers learn colors? It feels essential that they recognize their bright red overalls as bright red, or that marker they’ve been sleeping with for three weeks as the perfect shade of yellow, right?
