Panic attacks are not tantrums. They’re a sign that a child is in serious emotional distress. If your child is having a panic attack or an anxiety attack, it’s important to help them calm down. One of the worst things you can do to a child –or anyone– is tell them to “calm down.” Anxiety and panic can have physical manifestations, and those symptoms can be really intense especially for children. Telling someone to “calm down” when they’re dizzy, short of breath, or have a racing heart rate will likely do the opposite.
