Americans waste a lot of food. Consumers waste 21 percent of the available food supply and retailers waste another 10 percent, according to a 2014 study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The total value of this waste was $161.1 billion in 2010. But more than money is wasted. Land, water, energy, labor and chemicals for fertilizers and pesticides all go to waste when food is not eaten. (more)
