Approximately 132,000 children and adolescents younger than 18 were diagnosed with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes in 2015, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Registered dietitians Lynn Hilleman and Pauline Fletcher at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital Pediatric Diabetes Center said type 2 diabetes most commonly occurs in adults over age 40, yet it’s becoming increasingly more common in youth.
