No matter what age the kids are, when they come home from school they’re almost always hungry. It’s a great idea to keep a bunch of healthy yet simple snacks available to them, especially during the school year when they need something to tide them over between coming home and dinnertime. Snacks should be portioned specifically as snacks and not meals to keep your kids from eating too much and not wanting dinner. They should also be accessible enough for the kids to grab them to eat — think potato chip bag easy whenever possible. We want our kids to eat healthy, and making it convenient is a great way to encourage those habits.

There is just something magical about winter and Christmas. But in all of the wonder that is the holiday season, there can also be a lot of stress. During the holidays you want to be able to spend time with family and friends, keep your house clean, and partake in holiday festivities, all while trying to raise your kids and keeping a job.

Forager-horticulturalist children in the Amazon rainforest do not spend more calories in their everyday lives than children in the United States, but they do spend calories differently. That finding provides clues for understanding and reversing global trends in obesity and poor metabolic health, according to a Baylor University researcher in a study published in Science Advances. “Conventional wisdom suggests that an increasingly sedentary and germ-free lifestyle, resulting in low daily energy expenditure, is a primary factor underlying rising rates of obesity in the U.S. and elsewhere,” said Samuel Urlacher, Ph.D., assistant professor of anthropology at Baylor University. “The findings of our study challenge that notion. We demonstrate that Amazonian children with physically active lifestyles and chronic immunological challenges don’t actually burn more calories than much more sedentary children living here in the U.S.”

All moms want their children to be healthy, but as obesity continues to be a big problem for children and teens, it’s a difficult issue for parents to tackle. They can talk about diet, exercise and do their best to instill healthy habits, but sometimes there are other factors, like illnesses, that make it hard to manage. Researchers are still working on the issue, as childhood obesity is considered an epidemic which impacts one in five kids in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It’s not just about eating habits and exercise — other factors include genetics, metabolism, community design, sleep issues and any childhood trauma.

There’s no way to sugarcoat this news: Nearly half of American adults will be obese within a decade and one-quarter will be severely so, a new report predicts. It corrects for a weakness in previous estimates that may have made the problem seem not as big as it really is. Those estimates often relied on national health surveys and people tend to understate their weight in those.
